Purpose of the National Social Studies Leaders Association
The National Social Studies Leaders Association is dedicated to empowering and supporting educational leaders who are creating effective, inclusive, and equitable systems that advance the teaching and learning of PK-12 social studies.
We promote the interest of social studies leaders engaged in instruction, curriculum and material development, research, pre and in-service training of teachers, and social action. NSSLA encourages and assists in the development of high-quality leadership practices which result in the improvement of social studies instruction.
We encourage any member of NCSS who identifies as a Social Studies Leader to join in our work. Membership is open to supervisors, administrators, department chairs, teachers, and others who are members of NCSS and have or aspire to assist in the development, implementation, and supervision of social studies curriculum and instructional programs.
Connection of NSSLA to the National Council for the Social Studies
The National Social Studies Leaders Association (NSSLA) was founded in 1970 as an Associated Group of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS). NSSLA maintains a continuing liaison with NCSS offices and enjoys the rights, privileges, and services such a relationship affords.
