We know that many educators are supporting social studies, some with official supervisor or coordinator titles and others as department chairs, instructional coaches, or classroom teachers. So we've updated our name to reflect the desire to include everyone who works to make the world a better place. We will always remain focused on empowering and promoting those who are creating effective, inclusive, and equitable systems that advance the teaching and learning of PK-12 social studies. |

Boston 2024!
2024 Mel Miller Leader of the Year Nominations
Now Open!
We're excited to announce that nominations for the 2024 Mel Miller award are now open.
The NSSLA Board of Directors established the Outstanding Social Studies Leader Award to recognize members who best exemplify the leadership qualities of a social studies professional. The nominee need not hold a supervisory title but should demonstrate leadership qualities that support the mission of the NSSLA.
Following his death in 2006, the NSSLA Board of Directors voted to rename the award to honor Mel Miller. A social studies supervisor from Michigan, Mel Miller was a dedicated member of NSSLA who contributed immeasurably to the organization. The name was modified in 2024 to reflect that NSSLA members are leaders who hold many different titles.
The deadline for submitting your nominations is August 15. Learn more about the award qualifications and start the nomination process by clicking the button below:
